{"id":11393,"date":"2016-07-02T23:43:41","date_gmt":"2016-07-02T23:43:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/?p=11393"},"modified":"2018-12-31T03:57:25","modified_gmt":"2018-12-31T03:57:25","slug":"kaleidoscopes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/kaleidoscopes\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaleidoscope Mandala Collagraphs \/\/ Art Summer Camp Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>These mind-blowingly beautiful Kaleidoscope Mandala Collagraphs\u00a0 were created in one of our Tween &amp; Teen camps.<\/h3>\n<p>After studying the geometric symmetry of mandalas and radial designs, they cut and glued layers of very thin foam on large round poster board circles to create their printing plates. \u00a0The foam makes a perfect material for collagraphs, but to ensure that the layers of foam didn&#8217;t start coming off during the printing process, we added a thick layer of Mod Podge to help &#8220;seal&#8221; them and let dry overnight. But we weren&#8217;t finished with these\u00a0Kaleidoscope Mandala Collagraphs quite yet!<\/p>\n<p>The next day we were so fascinated by how stunning the printing plates looked that we thought it would be fun to come up with a way to turn them into a work of art on their own! \u00a0So after they printed them with black ink (the irony is we didn&#8217;t get any photos of their prints!!) &#8211; they added chalk pastel to the printing plates. \u00a0It was a cool process, because the printing plates had a lot of texture from the layers of foam and the dried black block printing ink &#8211; there was a lot of tooth to grab the pigment in the chalk pastel. \u00a0They outlined them with chalk to define the edge, an we mounted them on 22&#8243;x22&#8243; black poster board. \u00a0We go through a lot of black poster board around here!<\/p>\n<p>These Kaleidoscope Mandala Collagraphs\u00a0came out so beautiful! \u00a0They look like sparkling\u00a0gems or kaleidoscopes, each and every one of them!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-11289 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/collagraphmandala2.jpg\" alt=\"Kaleidoscope Mandala Collagraphs | www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\"
