Keep scrolling to see more of these fabulous\u00a0Mechanical Flying Sculptures &#8211; a 3D mixed media art project!<\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15419 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox6.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Box Creatures \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"424\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These Mechanical Flying Sculptures were hands down one of our favorite projects in recent memory!\u00a0 We LIVE for stuff like this!\u00a0 Where we just have a pile of loose parts, and a lot of time, and an abundance of imagination!\u00a0 This idea literally started from a little spark of ingenuity and morphed as we worked on it.\u00a0 My only idea was that we needed to make box thingy with a crown.\u00a0 Then our other teacher, Sonja said the crown reminded her of another project we did recently &#8211; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/mechanical-creatures\/\">DaVinci inspired mechanical creatures<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/more-mechanicals\/\"><strong>Gen 2 version<\/strong><\/a> of that project&#8230; and I was like YES!!!!\u00a0 Yes Yes Yes!\u00a0 And we were off to the races!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox25.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Flying Sculptures - a 3D mixed media art project \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After teeing up the concept to a lot of blank stares, we decided to just dive in and hope that it came into focus as the kids worked.\u00a0 We had the idea to incorporate their photos in some way into the project we the first step was to have a little photo shoot.\u00a0 Next,\u00a0 paint a box.\u00a0 Any which way you like.\u00a0 The more color, the merrier&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox24.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Flying Sculptures - a 3D mixed media art project \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15931 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox22.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Flying Sculptures - a 3D mixed media art project \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next we added lines &amp; shapes to the box and talked about the concept of these being &#8220;mechanical&#8221; &#8211; meaning not powered by gas or electricity, but gears!\u00a0 There had to be gears somewhere on their design.\u00a0 Or gear-like lines.\u00a0 They also added more texture and color with oil pastels and chalk pastels.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe it was at some point around this time, we conceptualized that they needed to have wings to fly!\u00a0 (It could have been all that talk of DaVinci and how amazing and prophetic his early sketches of a flying machine were, truly a genius so far ahead of his time!!)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15932 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox23.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Box Creatures \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So we let them draw wings out of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2zEqK3o\">36 gauge tooling foil<\/a><\/strong> (a fav staple around here!), and we cut them out.\u00a0 They had to &#8220;carve&#8221; lines &amp; shapes into the tooling foil by laying them on a soft piece of felt, and carving into them with a wooden stylus.\u00a0 Later we attached the wings with brads.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-15936 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox27.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox9.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Box Creatures \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This pic above shows how we attached the crowns on the top of the box.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/mechanicalbox12.jpg\" alt=\"Mechanical Box Creatures \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"966\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We let the kids loose with our bucket of old hardware to add screws, rivets, and random mechanical looking do-dads.\u00a0 By this time, everyone had a very elaborate idea of how their flying machine was going to operate.\u00a0 We encouraged them to be very thoughtful in their selection of pieces and parts &#8211;
