Klee El Jardin de Rosas"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>This magical chalk pastel drawing project was inspired by Paul Klee&#8217;s &#8220;Jardin de Rosas&#8221;.<\/h4>\n<p>If you&#8217;re not familiar with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Klee\">Paul Klee&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> work, take a minute and feast your eyes on it <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/paulklee.fr\/index.html\">here<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0 He is one of our favorite artists, and I remember going through a period of time where I was obsessed with his drawings from childhood &#8211; of which there are many preserved.\u00a0 (As a side note, if you&#8217;re fascinated by the correlation between children&#8217;s art and that of modern artists, this is one of my favorite books &#8211; <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2GyWwPq\">The Innocent Eye<\/a><\/em> <\/strong>by Jonathan Fineberg.)<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Paul Klee&#8217;s original <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/vr.theatre.ntu.edu.tw\/fineart\/painter-wt\/klee\/klee-1920x.jpg\"><em>Jardin de Rosas<\/em><\/a><\/strong> from 1920.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-16120 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/klee-1920x-min.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Klee Jardin de Rosas\" width=\"640\" height=\"735\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We did this project in our 5-9 yr. old class, but really it&#8217;s appropriate for a wide range of ages.\u00a0 It easily lends itself to modification for age and different skill levels.<\/p>\n<p>All of our lessons inspired by an artist start with a class discussion and look at the artist&#8217;s work.\u00a0 \u00a0We observe and discuss thoughts about the shapes, color, and images in the scene.<\/p>\n<p>In his original painting, students noticed houses and buildings \u201chidden\u201d within the scene.\u00a0 They noticed they appeared camouflaged by connecting lines and similar colors.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/paulklee10.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Klee inspired \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students used oil pastel to draw their structures using foundational shapes: squares, rectangles, triangles, cylinders.\u00a0 They noticed where are connecting points (where one line meets another), and added faceted lines into our backgrounds that burst towards the edges of the paper.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, they added the sphere \u201crose\u201d or tree accents that inspire the title of Klee&#8217;s composition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-16093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/fort-mill\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2018\/12\/paulklee8.jpg\" alt=\"Paul Klee inspired \/\/ www.smallhandsbigart.com\" width=\"640\" height=\"487\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using chalk pastel, students added color into each section with a limited color palette.\u00a0 We prepped color groupings of chalk and oil pastel before class for their selection.\u00a0 We discussed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> color theory and how the use of similar colors creates a confusing scene where the viewer must decipher the subject of the painting.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The final compositions were truly stunning!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full
