with a scraper application technique.\u00a0 We have a huge box of credit card blanks that someone donated, and we also used texture paint scrapers like <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/362iAyL\">this<\/a> inexpensive set of four you can get on Amazon!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For paint, we chose to use a mix of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickblick.com\/products\/blick-premium-grade-tempera\/\">Blick Premium tempera<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/33UcqyK\">Colorations BioColor.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both have a nice thick, creamy texture and don&#8217;t crack or flake when dry.\u00a0 The BioColor is particularly smooth &amp; creamy, and has an interesting opacity when layered.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26589\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper7.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract Scraper painting \/ Small Hands Big Art\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper7.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper7-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26586\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper10.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract Scraper painting \/ Small Hands Big Art\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper10.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper10-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, we had a quick refresher on color theory basics, and each student selected their own<b> color palette <\/b>and troubleshooted color mixing directly on their paper.\u00a0 It was important to work slowly -the goal wasn&#8217;t to see who could cover their surface the fastest, but rather who could put the most thought into their color choices and direction of their layered swatches of paint.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26587\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper9.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract Scraper painting \/ Small Hands Big Art\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper9.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper9-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students used their scraping tools to work their paint, by pushing and pulling it across the surface of the paper.\u00a0 \u00a0We coached them on how to hold the scraper perfectly upright, vs. at a sharp angle.\u00a0 The harder the scrape, the more paint underneath is revealed.\u00a0 If they hold their scrapers at too sharp of an angle, basically all they are doing is &#8220;stirring&#8221; the paint.\u00a0 Each student was challenged to think through their \u201ccolor-blocks\u201d or sections of each color\u2026. What shape is it? What happens if the paint overlaps? How do you create a design that includes overlaps but isn\u2019t just a big mixture of colors? How do you directionally apply the paint so that you aren\u2019t just making stripes?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26594\" src=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper1.jpg\" alt=\"Abstract Scraper painting \/ Small Hands Big Art\" width=\"640\" height=\"812\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.smallhandsbigart.com\/south-charlotte\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2019\/10\/scraper1-236x300.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We really wanted them to think critically\u00a0 about their composition while enjoying the freedom of movement from this &#8220;go with the flow&#8221; type of painting.\u00a0 \u00a0If you do this in a large class, you definitely have to be on the lookout for speed racers who will absent-mindedly turn their entire paper into a giant blob of brown!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The tempera paint dries really fast on the heavy watercolor paper, which makes it ideal for layering different colors.\u00a0 We demonstrated the importance of breaking up large dark sections of dark paint by adding white or other lighter colors on top.\u00a0 We also talked about unity and balance, and how if you have a single swatch of black paint up in the corner, it will tend to draw the eye up to only that spot.\u00a0 If a student was over-working a particular section, we suggested that they flip their paper in a different direction to work it from a new angle.<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After creating their scraped sections, they worked back in with repetitive mark-making.\u00a0 For this step we used a neutral black or white oil pastel.<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were encouraged to think of a pattern, shape, or line to meditatively repeat.
