How Art and Pottery Classes Can Help Your 5-9 Yr Old
It's more than just a screen free escape
- It can be a launchpad for building confidence & life skills
- Enhances Focus and Patience
Both art and pottery require sustained attention and concentration, teaching kids to focus, follow through with a project, and develop patience as they work through each step of the creative process. - Improves Social and Communication Skills
Collaborative art projects and sharing tools/materials promote teamwork, communication, and problem-solving in group settings. Students learn how to give and receive constructive feedback and support their peers. - Supports Emotional Development
The process of creating allows children to explore and manage emotions, helping them build resilience and empathy. Art and pottery offer a safe space for kids to express themselves in ways words cannot always capture. - Teaches Perseverance and Growth
Working with art materials or clay sometimes requires multiple attempts to get it just right. Learning that mistakes are part of the process helps kids develop resilience and a growth mindset, making them more adaptable in other areas of life. - Cultivates an Appreciation for Art and Culture
Through exposure to various techniques, styles, and art history, students develop an appreciation for different cultures and creative expression. This broadens their understanding of the world and enriches their overall education.
Why Choose Small Hands Big Art?
Because Your Child Deserves an Exceptional Creative Experience!
Classes for this age combine fine art techniques with your child’s own creative expression to develop key skills across multiple areas. Through exposure to art history, current artists, and the core elements of art (line, color, balance, etc.), children not only learn the fundamentals but also explore their own imagination.
We create a space where kids can slow down, feel confident in trying new things, and work through challenges. For many kids, “I don’t know how!” becomes an opportunity to practice perseverance, problem-solving, and independent thinking. The class also fosters social interaction, giving kids a chance to share ideas, collaborate, and make decisions about their own artwork.
ART CLASS: Our Art classes include painting, drawing, and hands-on building, using high-quality materials like liquid watercolors, rich chalk and oil pastels, tempera and acrylic paints, and unique surfaces—no crayons or googly eyes here! We encourage creative risk-taking, teaching kids how to troubleshoot, deconstruct, and try new approaches. With a mix of guided projects and open-ended creative prompts, our experienced instructors ensure a balanced approach that nurtures both technique and personal expression.
POTTERY CLASS: Our Pottery classes offer hands-on experiences that teach kids how to shape, mold, and explore the world of clay. Starting with a ball of clay, kids will learn to build both functional and sculptural pieces, as well as an introduction to the pottery wheel. Kids also learn about surface decoration through the use of texture tools learn glazing techniques.
