We love love LOVE the colorful artwork of Melanie Mikecz and drew inspiration from her whimsical and geometric designs to teach students a fun and simple way to draw a hippo! We tried these in both our 3-5 yr. old classes as well as our 5-9 year old classes, experimenting with different processes to add water for the hippo to stand in. The 3-5 yr. old examples are first. We had them decoupage a layer of tissue paper on top for the water. You will fall in love with these whimsical Melanie Mikecz Inspired Happy Hippos!
In our 5-9 year old classes, we tried a paint roller and watered down metallic tempera paint to add the water. The kids rolled it on and we wiped it off with a paper towel and then let them sprinkle it with a little shimmery glitter. The painted water looked ok but we didn’t love it as much as the tissue paper water!
