In Elementary, Preschool

We love love LOVE the colorful artwork of Melanie Mikecz and drew inspiration from her whimsical and geometric designs to teach students a fun and simple way to draw a hippo!  We tried these in both our 3-5 yr. old classes as well as our 5-9 year old classes, experimenting with different processes to add water for the hippo to stand in.  The 3-5 yr. old examples are first.  We had them decoupage a layer of tissue paper on top for the water. In our 5-9 year old classes, we tried a paint roller and watered down metallic tempera paint to add the water.  The kids rolled it on and we wiped it off with a paper towel and then let them sprinkle it with a little shimmery glitter.  The painted water looked ok but we didn’t love it as much as the tissue paper water!

Either way though, we fell in love with these Melanie Mikecz Inspired Happy Hippos!
