Owl Suncatcher // Karla Gerard Inspired Sun Catchers

We loved the oil pastel on contact paper technique we used for the recent Karla Gerard inspired sun catchers so much so that we decided to try it again with owls during last Saturday’s Open Studio class.

Students first drew whimsical owls with sharpie on the sticky side of a sheet of contact paper, and then colored them in with oil pastel.  We instructed them to start with a “ghost” shape for the owl’s body and they took it from there!  We cut a frame out of a piece of cardboard and, after attaching a 2nd sheet of contact paper on top, we mounted them in the frame and then they made a hanger using a wooden dowel, colored wire and beads.  Beautiful!

What a wonderful and whimsical project. I really love them. I have a question, though…was it challenging for the kids to use the sticky side of the contact paper? Frustrations? Stuck skin/hair, lol? Also, do you have a clever idea for making the frames easily? Thanks so much, I love your website.
