Yesterday we made salt dough birdhouses with our 3-5 year olds (we’ll paint them next week). Mixing salt dough from scratch with children is a very organic process because it shows them how easy it is to create something amazing from very simple ingredients in the kitchen.
It’s hard to find a good salt dough recipe, so we thought we’d share ours:
Salt Dough Recipe
- 2 cups flour
- 1 cup salt
- 1 cup warm tap water
Combine flour & salt and half of the water in a large bowl. Stir until thick. Add the rest of the water. Stir some more. Add more flour. Stir. More flour. Keep stirring. A little more flour. Now a little more water. Oops, more flour. Stick your hands in the bowl and try to knead it. Call for help because your hands are too sticky to grab the bag of flour yourself. Continue this process for approximately 10 minutes until you have the most amazingly soft and non-sticky, non-gooey, non-crumbly dough! Bake at 250 degrees for 1-2 hours. Or maybe 4. Or 6.
